Types of Lakes in India

TYPES OF  LAKES IN INDIA:

The Himalaya region is dotted with hundreds of lakes. Most lakes are found at altitudes of less than 5000 m, with the size of the lakes diminishing with altitude. The largest lake is the Pangong Tso, which is spread across the border between India and Tibet. It is situated at an altitude of 4600 m and is 8 km wide and nearly 134 km long. The highest lake is the Gurudongmar in North Sikkim, 5370 m. Lakes of India have their different kinds of origins like:

1. Tectonic Lakes:  Old Pleistocene Lakes of Kashmir and Kumaon Himalayas.

2. Crater Lakes:  They are due to volcanicity.

3. Glacial Lakes:  They are in big mountains.

4. Alluvial Lakes:  Oxbow lakes in the Ganga plains.

5. Aeolian Lakes:  Caused due to small depressions of hollows.

6. Lagoons:  They are formed due to depositions of sand bars along the sea coasts.
